50-state street legal 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6 K&N 57-Series FIPK Performance Air Intake

The thing that people love most about the 2005-2014 Toyota Tacoma is its rugged simplicity. There's no air conditioned seats with embossed belt buckle upholstery. The step bars don't whirr themselves down to greet you, and there's definitely no 'soft-touch surfaces'. Instead, everything is big, easy to operate, and made from sturdy materials. This allows you to use the 'Taco' like a truck, and not worry about breaking stuff. And that simple-is-better philosophy carries over to the engine bay, where its tough 4.0L V6 doesn't 'wow' you with twin-turbos and lots of horsepower. But it's certainly capable of covering several hundred thousand miles without skipping a beat. 236-hp/266 lb-ft isn't a lot of power though, and it can leave many Tacoma owners wanting for more. Which is where the 50-state street legal K&N 57-9025 FIPK performance air intake comes in.

One of the best ways to increase horsepower and torque, is to make an engine breathe better. When you funnel a high volume of cold air into the cylinders, the engine is able to burn fuel more completely. This 'combustion efficiency' results in more force/horsepower being created every time that the fuel detonates. We dyno-tested a 2012 Toyota Tacoma with a K&N 57-Series FIPK air intake system fitted to its 4.0L V6, and found that it made an estimated additional 8.9 horsepower and 12.7 lb-ft of torque. The K&N FIPK system also sharpens the throttle response, which makes that power increase immediately noticeable. Your individual performance increase may vary, due to things like the mileage, modifications and condition of your exact Tacoma. But you will definitely see a difference in the performance.

To make this power increase possible, the narrow factory intake tube and low-flow OEM paper air filter gets replaced by a shortened, large diameter K&N intake tube that connects directly to the base of the factory air filter box. This direct path allows more air to be delivered to the engine, with less restriction or turbulence. Surrounding the high-flow K&N air filter is an application specific air filter heat shield, which prevents the high-volume conical K&N air filter from collecting the warm air inside the engine bay.

1994-1996 Ford Bronco & F150 V8 Air Intake System from K&N Boosts an Estimate 10 HP

1994-1996 Ford F-150 / Bronco 5.0L V8 & 5.8L V8 K&N Air Intake System

K&N 57-Series FIPK Intake for the 1994-1996 Ford F-150 / Bronco 5.0L V8 & 5.8L V8

Once upon a time, people actually used their Sport Utility Vehicles to go off-road. Whether they needed to check out the fence line on the back-40, or get to a remote fishing/hunting/camping spot, SUV's like the 1994-1996 Ford Bronco had the chops to get them there. The fact that it could be driven on the road was an added bonus, and the Bronco's steep price tag also made it something of a status symbol. It shared its platform and engines, the venerable 302/5.0L V8, and the equally formidable 351 Windsor/5.8L V8, with America's most popular pickup, the 1994-1996 Ford F-150. Together, these two brawny Ford's helped lots of people get lots of stuff done. But their shared V8's never lived up to their performance potential, which you can rectify with a K&N 57-2543 FIPK air intake.

1994-1996 Ford F-150 / Bronco 5.0L V8 & 5.8L V8 K&N Air Intake System Box

K&N Performance Air Intake Kit for the 1994-1996 Ford F-150 / Bronco 5.0L V8 & 5.8L V8

Back in the mid-90's, the Ford V8 was constrained by its restrictive factory air intake system. The 302 and 351 were originally designed to use carburetors, but the addition of fuel injection and emission controls led to rather poor airflow characteristics. K&N's 57-Series FIPK performance intake system, number 57-2543, is designed to replace Ford's narrow intake tube, and factory air filter box with its tiny air inlet. In its place, the K&N air intake uses a wider diameter High Density Polyethylene intake tube that feeds air directly into the throttle body. Unlike the stock piece, the inside of the K&N intake tube is completely smooth, which significantly reduces air turbulence, and its shape has been aerodynamically optimized to provide a more direct airflow path.

Since cold air contains more oxygen than warm air, cooler air enables the engine to burn more of the fuel during the combustion cycle. This stronger "explosion" allows this K&N 57-Series performance air intake system to deliver an estimated increase of 10 extra horsepower and 12 lb-ft of torque (depending on things like your engine's condition, mileage and modifications) on a 1995 Ford F150 5.0L V8.

In order to channel a high volume of cold air directly to the engine, this K&N performance air intake kit comes with a sturdy heat shield that sits in place of the stock air box. This protects the large conical K&N performance air filter from the warm air inside the engine bay, and allows the system to collect the coolest air possible. That filter also provides clean air with higher airflow than a stock paper air filter, and you won't have to clean it for up to 100,000 miles (if you drive in dusty/dirt filled environments, we recommend that you inspect the filter every 25,000 miles). Plus the entire intake system is backed by a 10-year/Million Mile Limited Warranty, so you can rest assured that it'll perform for years to come.

Young Jacob Hodges Scores First NHRA JDRL Wally at Wild Horse Pass Drag Strip

Jacob Hodges is approved to race as fast as a 13.90 dial in at 45 MPH

This is Jacob Hodges’ second year racing Junior Drags and at an age when most kids would be content to ride a bicycle downhill, Jacob Hodges is approved to race as fast as a 13.90 dial in at 45 MPH

It was roughly a year ago when K&N Filters sponsored drag racer Jacob Hodges hit a milestone in his budding career. At a minimum of 10 years before he was eligible to be licensed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Jacob Hodges, just 6-years-old at the time, earned his Jr. Drag Racing license. During the Southern California Drag Racing Association (SCEDA) race weekend at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California, Jacob spent two days on the track running through the paces and earning his stripes.

Now, young Master Hodges is a whopping 7 years old and winning races. Recently Jake scored his first Wally at the Wild Horse Pass Drag Strip for the NHRA JDRL Division seven races. It was a double header weekend for Jake out in Chandler, Arizona. Jake’s first race on Saturday started out well with a first round win, however, he was eliminated in the second round in a double break out race. Breaking out is when a racer manages to cross the finish line in less time than the predicted elapsed time he dialed-in beforehand. While both drivers broke out, Jake Hodges broke out more.

Briggs & Stratton Racing L0206 engine with K&N clamp-on air filter R-1100

Jacob’s father Travis Hodges, who is K&N’s Race Team Manager, has equipped Jake’s Briggs & Stratton Racing L0206 engine with K&N clamp-on air filter R-1100 to provide superior airflow

The next day is when things began to go in Jake’s favor. His first round on Sunday was extremely close, but Jake got the win light by a mere .009 of a second. Jake played a game of strategy in round two of eliminations to get the win. Playing it smart, Jake realized his opponent was going too fast, so Jake hit the brakes and let his opponent break out. Round three was an easy win for Jake as he had a bye run on his side of the eliminations ladder and simply had to cross the finish line to advance.

Jake put on his race face going into the final round and kept his winning strategy in the back of his mind. It must be hard for extremely young racers to avoid the temptation to drive as fast as possible every time they leave the starting line, however this perseverance paid off for Jake Hodges. His reaction time was a bit slow, so as Jacob neared the finish line he hit the brakes to avoid breaking out of his dial-in. Jacob dialed in a 13.90 elapsed time (ET) and crossed the line with a 13.977. His opponent, however, had a 13.86 dial in but overshot it running a 13.292. This handed the final round win over to Jake Hodges and earned him his first Wally.

How Does a Cold Air Intake Work? K&N Explains the Benefits of Air Intake Systems.

K&N air filters

In 1969, K&N introduced the reusable, high-flow cotton gauze air filter initially designed for racing, but they soon found their way into countless street cars and motorcycles

What Does a Cold Air Intake Do?

In 1969, K&N introduced the reusable, high-flow cotton gauze air filter. This revolutionary performance air filter was initially designed for racing, but soon found its way onto countless street cars and custom built hotrods. By the late 80's, fuel injection was becoming the industry standard, so K&N introduced the idea of bolt-on performance air intakes. Like its first high-flow air filter, its new cold air intake systems were proven to significantly increase horsepower and torque, and they quickly became the gold standard for custom car builders, off-roaders, racers, and performance enthusiasts across the globe.

Today, K&N cold air intake systems are the go-to performance upgrade for anybody wanting to increased horsepower and torque from their vehicle’s engine. These bolt-on performance kits are easy to install, and the reusable cotton gauze air filters are warrantied for 10 years or one million miles. But let's look at how they work.

How a Cold Air Intake System Works

Restrictive factory air box, air intake tube and air filter

Most vehicle manufacturers equip vehicles with a maze of sound baffling, turbulence causing flexible hosing, and usually a restrictive factory air filter box

The best way to explain a cold air intake system is to think of your car's engine like a pair of lungs. In order to make power, the cylinders have to inhale air to create the explosion that produces wheel-turning horsepower and torque. Since cold air contains more oxygen molecules than warm air, injecting a higher volume of oxygen-rich air into the cylinders allows the engine to burn fuel more completely during the combustion cycle. This "combustion efficiency" results in an increase of horsepower and torque, using roughly the same amount of fuel.

Put simply, if you add oxygen to a fire, you get a stronger fire. K&N cold air intake systems are designed to deliver more oxygen-rich cold air into the engine than a stock air intake tract. This results in a stronger 'explosion', which contains more force to push the piston down and turn the crankshaft. That extra energy/power is then transferred to the transmission and out to the wheels.

O2 = HP

K&N air intake engine bay photo

Most K&N cold air intake systems are designed to replace restrictive factory components with an easy to install air intake tube, high-flow air filter, and application specific air filter heat shield

The resulting horsepower gain varies by product and application, but each K&N cold air intake system has been designed to increase airflow efficiency for specific vehicles and their engines. Each of K&N’s performance air intake kits undergo significant testing to ensure that the high-flow K&N air filter and intake tube is positioned to collect and deliver the coolest air possible. An engine bay is filled with low-performing warm air, and if the air filter placement is less than ideal (usually due to space limitations), K&N cold air intake systems will use application specific air filter heat shields to prevent warm air from entering the system.

Breathing in More Power

K&N air intake installation video

K&N performance cold air intakes include step-by-step installation instructions with photos, and many even have an associated installation video available online

Clean air is vital to the performance of not only the engine, but a cold air intake system as well. That's why each K&N performance intake system comes with a K&N high-flow cotton gauze air filter. These legendary K&N air filters are made with 4-6 layers of our proprietary cotton gauze material sandwiched between 2 layers of rugged aluminum mesh. When combined with the unique K&N filter oil, the cotton fibers are able to attract contaminants that are smaller in diameter than a human hair. This type of filtration is called "depth loading", and it keeps dirt particles trapped within the matrix of cotton fibers, while more air flows through to the engine. K&N air filters typically score 97%-99% filtration efficiency following the ISO 5011 Air Filter Test protocol.

Installing a K&N Cold Air Intake System

K&N air filter cleaning instructions

The K&N air filters used in K&N cold air intakes can go up to 100,000 miles before cleaning, depending on driving conditions, but can be easily cleaned with a K&N Recharger Kit

Thanks to extensive Research & Development, K&N engineers are able to create cold air intake systems that are extremely effective, yet easy to install. Most K&N performance intakes can be installed using the factory mounting points, so you typically won't need more than a few wrenches and a screwdriver. But regardless of which system you choose, it will come with a step-by-step instruction guide, complete with photos of each step, and a tool list. Plus, the K&N Technical Support team is just a phone call away.

K&N Warranty

Besides increasing horsepower and torque, a K&N cold air intake system will save you time and money. Every K&N air filter can be washed and reused over and over again. So, you won't have to buy a new air filter every 10,000-15,000 thousand miles. Just wash out your K&N air intake air filter every 100,000 miles (depending on driving conditions), then re-install it. The entire K&N cold air intake system is backed by the K&N 10-year/Million Mile Limited Warranty, so you get guaranteed performance and guaranteed quality.

Street Legal Air Intakes

K&N air intake dyno testing R&D

K&N performs in-house dyno testing on each cold air intake to provide vehicle owners with an idea of the estimated increase in horsepower they might experience

Many K&N cold air intake systems are completely street legal in all 50 states, and will come with a California Air Resource Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO) number which guarantees that particular air intake kit has been tested to comply with the current emissions standards. EO numbers apply to the kit, as well as to the year, make and model of vehicle that it is being installed on. Intake systems without an EO number are street legal in most states, but cannot be installed on emissions controlled vehicles in the state of California, or other states that have adopted California emission standards. You can use K&N's search by part tool to learn which cold air intakes are CARB exempt, and for which vehicles.

K&N Air Intake Horsepower Gains

We can't guarantee that you will get a specific horsepower and foot-pounds of torque, because things like the mileage, modifications and condition of your exact vehicle will factor into the final number. But we can show you the dyno results for a vehicle just like yours, that's been fitted with one of our many K&N cold air intake systems.

1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L K&N Air Intake Delivers More Performance

K&N air intake system for 1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee

Boost performance of 1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee models powered by the venerable 4.0L straight-6, originally designed by AMC in 1964, with a K&N performance air intake system

First introduced by American Motors back in 1984, the Jeep Cherokee helped to usher in the modern era of SUV's. By the early 90's, it had become one of the most popular and powerful midsize Sport Utility Vehicles on the market. Suburbanites were ditching their minivans and flocking en masse to the SUV, so to help it keep pace with the competition; Jeep significantly updated the Cherokee in 1996 and 1997. They did however; keep the venerable 4.0L straight-6, which was originally designed by AMC back in 1964. Thanks to fuel injection, and a host of other modern improvements, the Jeep Cherokee 4.0L made a very adequate 190-hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. But owners can now enjoy more performance from their 1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee, thanks to a K&N FIPK Air Intake System.

1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee

First introduced by American Motors back in 1984, the Jeep Cherokee helped to usher in the modern era of SUV's

Designed specifically to fit the 1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 H.O. inline-6, the K&N FIPK Air Intake System, number 57-1518, is able to deliver more horsepower and torque, by reducing the airflow restrictions between the air filter and the intake manifold. A high-volume conical K&N air filter fits in place of the stock air box, and feeds significantly more air to the engine through a special rotationally molded intake tube. This low-restriction intake tube is made from rugged High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), so you won't have to worry about it on the trail. HDPE can also help to prevent engine heat from warming the air before it reaches the throttle body. The shape of the tube itself has been engineered to reduce air turbulence and deliver more air to the throttle body, faster.

To ensure a constant supply of cool air, the 1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee K&N FIPK Intake System comes with a special heat shield that protects the air filter from engine bay heat. The high-flow K&N air filter is not only washable and reusable but it is backed by a 10-year/million mile limited warranty. The oiled cotton gauze filter media is also able to provide much better air flow than a synthetic or stock paper air filter, without sacrificing engine protection. So no matter how much dust you kick up on the trail, your engine will be protected.

1997 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L K&N air intake 57-1518 test on dyno

When K&N air intake 57-1518 was dyno tested on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L an estimated 7.9 horsepower and 9.19 lb-ft of torque was gained at the rear wheels

This 57-Series K&N FIPK Air Intake System was designed exclusively for the 1996-2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L, which means that it will fit in place of the stock intake system with no modifications and the intake tube even accommodates the factory crank case ventilation hose. Using the factory mounting points, installation should take about 90-minutes, and only requires 2 wrenches and a screwdriver. This intake system is street legal in all 50 states, and is backed by a 10-year/million mile limited warranty.
