Boost 2013-2014 VW Jetta TDI Turbo Diesel Performance With K&N Diesel Air Intake

K&N Air Intake under the hood of VW Jetta TDI diesel

The K&N 2013-2014 VW Jetta diesel intake utilizes an application specific air filter heat shield designed to deflect engine heat and work in conjunction with the factory cold air inlet

The global market is no stranger to the advantages a diesel engine has to offer, most specifically excellent fuel-efficiency. Yet, the diesel engine’s reputation of being slow and dirty has hurt mainstream acceptance in many parts of the world. Volkswagen Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) has helped to sway non-believers over to the diesel side. The use of a turbocharger has helped increase performance and acceleration while the introduction of direct injection has helped to improve efficiency along with lower emissions and improved torque output. Simply because the main benefit of a Volkswagen TDI Diesel is impressive fuel economy doesn’t mean the performance side of the engine should go unappreciated.

K&N Air Intake System for Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel engines

K&N diesel air intake, number 69-9509TTK, replaces stock components with a powder coated mandrel-bent aluminum air intake tube, and a high-flow K&N performance air filter

Volkswagen TDI diesel engines, like the 2.0L TDI engine available in 2013-2014 VW Jetta models, shine in the torque department. The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI diesel makes just 140 horsepower but its 236 lb-ft of peak torque comes on at an extremely low 1,750 RPM. For 2013-2014 Volkswagen Jetta owners looking to improve diesel performance with a diesel intake system, look no further than K&N air intake 69-9509TTK. The K&N 2013-2014 Volkswagen Jetta TDI air intake system is able to improve an engine’s efficiency by reducing the amount of power being spent on drawing air into the engine. Stock components are particularly restrictive in cars with turbocharged engines and by replacing restrictive factory components with a K&N diesel air intake system, the engine is able to breathe easier. This increase in efficiency helps to boost performance by freeing up horsepower and torque which results in quicker acceleration.

The K&N diesel air intake 69-9509TTK replaces the accordion like stock intake hose and enclosed air box with a powder coated mandrel-bent aluminum air intake tube and a high-flow open element K&N performance air filter. Additionally, this K&N VW Jetta diesel air intake utilizes an application specific powder coated air filter heat shield designed to deflect engine heat and work in conjunction with the 2013-2014 Jetta’s factory cold air inlet. K&N’s expertise in air intake design has resulted in an estimated increase of 5.53 horsepower when installed on a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI. However, like most diesel engines the best performance boost comes in the form of lb-ft of torque. K&N VW diesel air intake 69-9509TTK made an estimated additional 11.84 lb-ft of torque at 2,600 RPM.

2013-2014 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI diesel owners can count on K&N to provide a bolt-on diesel performance upgrade without worrying about their engine. Significant testing goes into developing a K&N air intake system giving K&N the confidence to back its performance air intake systems with a 10-year/million mile limited warranty.

Reigning NHRA Super Gas Champion Luke Bogacki showed why he wears the number 1 for a second consecutive season with a strong performance at the Lucas Oil NHRA Route 66 Nationals. K&N filters sponsored NHRA driver Luke Bogacki earned his first appearance in the prestigious JEGS All-Stars event. Bogacki drove his Racing RV’s backed, Charlie Stewart Race Cars built and K&N air filters equipped Corvette roadster to the victory over an elite 8-car field. The JEGS All-Stars field is comprised of the top representatives from each of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions, plus the defending JEGS All-Star champion. As is the case each season, the Super Gas lineup read like a “Who’s Who” of 9.90 campaigners. This season’s All-Star roster included Jason Kenny, Steve Furr, Luke Bogacki, Steve Collier, Trevor Larson, Kari Larson, Eddy Plazier and Marko Perivolaris.

Luke Bogacki opened the JEGS All-Star competition with a matchup against defending All-Stars champion Trevor Larson in a bout between the top two national points finishers from 2014. After leaving the line first with a .011 reaction time to Larson’s .030, Bogacki got the nod in a double breakout decision with a near-perfect 9.899 ET. That win over Larson meant Luke Bogacki would face Division 6 representative Eddy Plazier, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In that round, Bogacki used a sizeable starting line advantage (.017 to .042) to defeat Plazier with a 9.919 elapsed time.

As if his All-Stars title wasn’t enough, Bogacki made his way through the Super Comp field in the Lucas Oil NHRA Route 66 Nationals, advancing his K&N Filters dragster to the final round

Waiting for Luke Bogacki in the final round of the JEGS All-Stars event was Division 7’s Perivolaris, also driving a Corvette based roadster. Luke Bogacki took the starting line advantage for the third consecutive round, with a .009 RT to Perivolaris’ .020. Bogacki once again held on for a double-breakout victory, crossing the finish line first by just .002-of-a-second to win with a 9.891 ET to the 9.882 of Perivolaris.

“Just earning a spot in the JEGS All-Stars was a huge goal of mine coming into the season,” expressed Bogacki. “I’ve been really fortunate in my racing career: I’ve had the opportunity to win a lot of races and accomplish a lot of things in this sport that most racers only dream about. As a result, my remaining checklist of accomplishments, if you will, is pretty short: win the Million Dollar Race, win the U.S. Nationals, and win the JEGS All-Stars. Being able to check this off is a major accomplishment. Everyone works all season just to earn a spot in this race; and once you’re here all you’ve got to do is beat three of the best racers in the world - It’s a tall order! I do want to extend a huge thank you to NHRA and to Woody (Scott Woodruff), the Coughlin family, and everyone at JEGS for making this event so special. They make us feel like the stars of the show for a weekend, it’s really a neat deal.”

In addition to K&N Filters and Racing RV’s, Luke Bogacki Motorsports is proud to represent associate marketing partners RacerSwag.com, Advanced Product Design, Watts Auto Diesel, Bill Taylor Enterprises, JEGS, Accelerated Graphics, Mickey Thompson Tires, American Race Cars, Renegade Racing Fuels, Flo-Fast Fluid Transfer Systems, ThisIsBracketRacing.com, and C.A.R.S. Subaru gave its flagship model, the WRX STi, a redesign for the 2015 model year. However, Subaru chose to carry over the EJ257 intercooled and turbocharged 2.5L H4 boxer engine. Some critics are disappointed that the base model WRX would receive the cutting edge 2.0L FA20DIT engine, while the 2015 WRX STi has the same engine from the 2014 model year. For those critics Masuo Takatsu, program manager for both the base 2015 WRX and WRX STi, had this to say “I felt the STI’s weaker area was the handling side. If we didn’t have the chassis, why add more power to overwhelm it? Also, this EJ engine has proved itself in competition. It’s an engine we confidently bring to the track. The new FA-series in the WRX has not been proven in motorsports. Plus, we knew the aftermarket could supply more power to those STi owners who demanded it.”

Masuo Takatsu knew what he was talking about. He predicted the aftermarket would step in and K&N® has done so with an aesthetically pleasing and highly functional performance air intake system for the 2015 and 2016 Subaru WRX STi 2.5L H4. K&N performance air intake system 69-8007TWR produced an amazing estimated 34.32 horsepower increase at the wheels of an otherwise stock 2015 Subaru WRX STi. Dyno testing on the K&N 2015-2016 Subaru WRX STi air intake was performed to back these substantial increased horsepower claims. K&N dyno testing shows that performance air intake 69-8007TWR produced an estimated gain of 34.32 horsepower at 5,400 RPM and an estimated increase of 33.58 lb-ft of torque at a low 3,511 RPM. These numbers represent peak estimated power gains. Significant power gains were witnessed across the entire RPM range which aids in improving the driving experience even during daily driving.

Rockstar Performance Garage 1973 Ford Bronco Uses K&N Carbon Fiber Intake System

Given his past on ranches and in the military, it isn’t surprising that Nic Ashby would choose a first gen 1973 Ford Bronco as a Rockstar Performance Garage project

Given his past on ranches and in the military, it isn’t surprising that Nic Ashby would choose a first gen 1973 Ford Bronco as a Rockstar Performance Garage project build for SEMA 2014

The first generation Ford Bronco was introduced for the 1966 model year as a direct competitor to the popular Jeep CJ5 as well as the early International Harvester Scout. As such, the original concept for Ford’s first compact SUV took a rugged no frills approach to styling and mechanical design. While the first generation Ford Bronco, sold from 1966 to 1977, used axles and brakes from the four-wheel-drive F100, it was an all original vehicle which had a frame, suspension, and body not shared with any other vehicle in the Ford Motor Company lineup. The early Ford Bronco’s short wheel base, solid axles, and optional V8 powertrain have made it very popular with the hardcore off-road community. Perhaps, second only to the Jeep CJ and later Wrangler models.

The Rockstar Performance Garage 1973 Ford Bronco relies on the superior airflow & superior performance of a K&N high-flow intake system

The Rockstar Performance Garage 1973 Ford Bronco relies on the superior airflow & superior performance of a K&N high-flow intake system to feed its Ford Racing Z363 cu-in stroker engine

Nic Ashby launched LDRSHIP designs in 2009 and by 2012 ROCKSTAR Energy Drinks and LDRSHIP designs implemented and built the first active lifestyle owned Performance Garage. Rockstar Performance Garage launched late in 2012 and combined the first true bridge between the Automotive and lifestyle markets. Nic Ashby brings a unique perspective to the automotive aftermarket. Nic grew up on horse ranches in Utah before joining the military following the tragedies of September 11th, 2001. He spent a year serving in the Iraqi desert as an ordinance specialist. When asked what an ordinance specialist does, Nic put it very simply “We found explosives, and used bigger explosives to blow them up.” Given his past, it isn’t surprising that Nic Ashby would choose a first gen Ford Bronco as a Rockstar Performance Garage project. The Ford Bronco offers the kind of utility and maneuverability that would be at home on a horse ranch in Utah, or even the Iraqi desert.

At the heart of this thoroughly modernized classic is a Ford performance racing parts Z363 cubic inch stroker engine. Ford Racing rates this 302 Windsor based small block Ford engine at 500 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque. Transplanting this high-horsepower stroker engine in the Rockstar Performance Garage Bronco was simple because it is based on the classic 302 small block Ford that was optional equipment in 1973. Nothing like original is the FAST Fuel Injection system sitting atop the BOSS 302 cast iron block and taking care of the Bronco’s fuel injection needs. For a build this epic, no run of the mill air cleaner would suffice. Nic chose to adapt a K&N carbon fiber air intake system and high-flow air filter originally designed for the Corvette ZR1 onto the Bronco. The Rockstar Performance Garage 1973 Ford Bronco exhales through dual Magnaflow Exhaust wrapped in Heatshield Products Lava Exhaust and Header Wrap which dumps just in front of the rear axle for maximum ground clearance at the rear of the Bronco.

Of course all of this performance means nothing on the trail without the proper equipment getting that power to the ground. Power leaves the engine through an automatic transmission mated to an Advanced Adaptors Atlas II transfer case. Custom drive shafts from Inland Empire Drivelines reach out the 9” third members in front and back. Inside Detroit Lockers with 5:12 ring and pinion gears turn the Nitro Gear Axle Shafts. ATX 20” Slab beadlock wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson 38x15.5R20 Baja MTZ mud terrain tires provide traction, while Wilwood brakes provide friction. Gone is the stock first gen Ford Bronco suspension. In its place are Rockkrawler Coilovers with 3-link front and dual triangulated 4-link rear suspension.

Since there’s no harm in adding a little modern comfort and convenience to the interior, Rockstar Performance Garage installed a Kicker Audio Bluetooth deck and speakers, Dakota Digital gauges, and even air conditioning via a Vintage Air A/C and Heating unit. Numerous other accessories, such as Bulldog LED lighting and a Warn 9.5xp-s winch only help further the Rockstar Performance Garage 1973 Ford Bronco’s trail readiness. Nic Ashby brought the Rockstar Performance Garage Ford Bronco, along with several other award winning builds, to the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show and it was featured in the Heatshield Products booth. K&N is excited to see what Nic Ashby and the Rockstar Performance Garage crew brings to the upcoming 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
