Tyler Wheelie Wizzard Shepard Wows the Crowds

Tyler Shepard became interested in motorcycle wheelie shows after watching "Wheelie King", Doug Domokos perform in 1995.
As do most motorcycle enthusiasts, Tyler Shepard spends his fair share of time riding. When not cruising to work on is 2005, Suzuki SV 650, the Middletown, Ohio, native enjoys trail riding and also competes AMA Flattrack from the seat of his 2008, Honda CRF 450.

Although most riders would be satisfied with riding along the highway and trails and even embarking upon an occasional race, Shepard has managed to take his passion for cycles a step farther. The twenty-eight-year-old has also managed to master the art of riding wheelies. In fact, Shepard performs motorcycle wheelie shows several times a year. The rider schedules in the neighborhood of fifteen to twenty shows annually, and throughout the past twelve years, has wowed audiences in fourteen states.

Shepard first got interested in the sport of riding wheelies and performing other tricks upon watching the "Wheelie King", Doug Domokos, perform in 1995 at a flattrack race in Celina, Ohio. Shortly thereafter, the rider began working on his own bag of tricks and eventually scheduled his first of what would prove many performances to come.

The rider performs at an array of different types of events. When asked the strangest event he had experienced, the rider answered, "A church Easter egg hunt. I did my show, then the kids took off for eggs in a huge swarm. Referring to another gig, he continued, "I once rode two hours non-stop during a parade in Columbus, Ohio. I could barely let go of the grips when it was over."

Most anyone who has any experience on a bike at all can rev the engine, pop the clutch and grab a wheelie, but there is an art to riding on one's back wheel for any distance what soever. when asked the trick to riding wheelies, the "Wheelie Wizzard" explained, "You have to keep the rear brake on the entire time, then adjust the throttle for how high you want the front wheel to come up."

Although some of his stunts are performed with the front tire secured to the bike, Shepard also performs stunts with his front wheel detached. In fact, this seems to be a crowd favorite. When asked what stunt gets the most response, he said, "The wheelie, without the front wheel, over the top of the Ford box-van. It looks awesome, but you can crash really easy."

Referring to the stunt that he considers the greatest challenge, Shepard continued, "The toughest has to be riding down fifty feet of 2X4 wood planks. You set those boards down, and suddenly, any parking lot becomes rougher and more off-camber than you ever thought. When I do that the first try, it's such a relief," he continued. "It took me fifteen tries one time to make it." Recalling the skill he is most proud of the rider shared, "Riding a wheelie blind folded. It doesn't look hard, but wow, does it mess with your mind once you make a couple of turns."

Tyler "Wheelie Wizzard" Shepard does not use his every-day bikes when it comes time to perform. In fact, he uses four different bikes, some of which are modified to fit his specific needs. Both of his Honda, CRF 50s are stock, but the sprockets that originally came on his Honda CRF 450 had to be changed, as he performs in a lot of small venues, such as parking lots. Once the gear ratio was modified, the rider could literally ride a wheelie slower than the average person can walk.

Tyler Shepard is also aware that to perform at his best, his bikes must be in optimal running condition. That in mind, he depends upon K&N filters to keep his engines running contaminant free. "Maintenance is huge," he explained. "I am a big oil and air filter change guy. Every bike I use is equipped with K&N air and oil filters. The air filters are great and last forever, and the oil filters work really well at trapping all the dirt and grime. One of the filters on my CRF 50s has been used for over ten years!"

One might suspect that Shepard would find the fact that he can perform talents that very few riders can accomplish as the most enjoyable aspect of his sport, but not so. When asked what he enjoys most, the rider said, " The people who come out with all of their kids. They have stories about when they used to ride, and the kids are telling me about how they have bikes. I just like hearing stories fans tell."

Sharing his future plans, Tyler "Wheelie Wizzard" Shepard said, " This winter, I'm doing a huge Monster Truck Show tour all over the country. To find out the dates, you can go to www.wheeliewizzard.com, or www.toughestmonstertrucks.com. I'd love to see you there."

A Podium Filled Weekend For Pro ATV Sand Drag Racer, Gary Gee Armstrong

Gary Armstrong is a strong advocate of using K&N products to keep his engine contaminant free.

During a recent outing at the Albany Motorsports Speedway, in Albany, Oregon, Gary "Gee" Armstrong experienced an exciting and memorable weekend while competing in the Pacific Northwest Sand Drag Championship Series. Going into the Pro ATV drag racing event, the rider had high hopes of success, and things couldn't have turned out any better, as Armstrong earned three podium spots prior to the event's end.

The rider embarked upon his first year as a pro racer in 2010. That in mind, one might suspect that Armstrong would be seeing his fair share of success. Granted, the rider is finding his way to the podium this season, but on the other hand, he became a name in the sport early on in his career. In fact, at the conclusion of his first season, Armstrong was awarded with Rookie of the Year.
Gary Armstrong recently earned three podium spots in one weekend, while racing in the Pacific Northwest Sand Drag Championship Series, at the Albany Motorsports Speedway.
Gary Armstrong recently earned three podium spots in one weekend, while racing in the Pacific Northwest Sand Drag Championship Series, at the Albany Motorsports Speedway.
Competing against some of the fastest racers in the Pacific Northwest and Canada, he also walked away victorious from the prestigious Oregon Off-Road Racing Association Pro Race during the same season.

"That big victory really gave me the taste of winning that keeps driving me in my racing today" recalled Armstrong. Referring to his passion for riding ATVs prior to his pro racing career, he said, "I'd been a recreational ATV off-road rider. In 2003, we moved to Florence, Oregon, a town on the Oregon coast, right next to the Oregon Dunes National Park. I was always out there riding in those sand dunes in a Yamaha of one kind or another,"he continued, "blasting up huge dune faces, and racing tourists and locals, you know; just for fun.

Eventually, I wanted some custom engine modifications done to my Yamaha YFZ, and became friends with engine builder and owner of Redline Racing, Cameron Sawyer," he explained. "He is also one of the fastest racers on the planet. One day, he called me up and said he and some other builders had rented a sand drag track fro the day, and invited me to come along and play. I did, and after making passes down the track all day with the timing lights, getting computer print-outs of my reaction times, elapsed times, sixty feet times and all, I was hooked on drag racing." Armstrong then said, "Fast forward a couple of years and a few hundred sand drag track races, and here I am."

Gary "Gee" Armstrong and his team are very satisfied with the outcome of the 2012 season thus far. In fact, he is currently sitting in first place in the Sports Bike 2 class, and tied for first in the Pro 2 Class.

When asked the key to future success, the rider said, "We're going to continue to train and work hard to be a very tough competitor on the track. And were going to continue having fun racing. Train like you race and race like you train," he continued. When asked how he prepared for the rigors of the sport, the rider explained, "I swim, and I cross train by mountain biking several days a week. I especially like doing downhill "bombing runs", blasting down steep forest slopes, while dodging huge fir trees. I also enjoy ripping down summer/fall ski resort slopes prior to snowboarding season."

Although Armstrong is an advocate of training, he is also acutely aware of the importance of maintenance. "I'm a fanatic about maintenance," shared Armstrong. "Not only do my wins depend upon it but my life does also. I've been bedside, visiting in the hospital with friends after some horrible accidents, one just two weeks ago, that maintenance could have prevented. We check, recheck and check again," he explained. "We use the best products our research can find to keep us reliable, strong, competitive and safe."

That in mind, Gary Armstrong depends upon K&N products to keep the internal components of his engine contaminant free. "We use K&N air, oil and crankcase filters exclusively," stated Armstrong. "I've used them since turning pro in 2010. The dyno tuning of our engine at Redline Racing demonstrates K&N air filters, with an Outerwears pre-filter, deliver increased horsepower to our engine without danger of sand and dust infiltration. Our tests of K&N's oil filters demonstrate that they trap more engine and transmission debris and clutch particles than any other oil filter we've used, thus assuming engine longevity and reliability. Nothing can end your hard earned winning race season like an engine failure!"

When asked what fans can expect from Gary "Gee" Armstrong during the remainder of the 2012 season, he said, "Let ma answer this way. According to one of the largest international off-road racing magazines, in just three years of racing pro, my name has become synonymous with ATV drag racing in the Pacific Northwest and the western region of the United States. Apparently, I'm a friendly, colorful and entertaining racer, who's been fortunate enough to attract national media attention to my sport. So, I guess race fans can expect more drama and excitement from me during this 2012 racing season." In conclusion, he said, "The fans are a big reason I'm out there, and making something happen."

K&N Filters Racer Elliott Despain Battles The Elements For Multiple Wins

Elliot Despain's never-say-die positive attitude and winning spirit has been what has pushed Elliot Despain to repeated podium finishes.
Elliot Despain's never-say-die positive attitude and winning spirit has been what has pushed Elliot Despain to repeated podium finishes.
Clearly those who think, "You can't beat Mother Nature," have never met Elliot Despain. Elliot's 2012 season has been a battle against the elements and the odds, resulting with multiple podium finishes for the intrepid Modified racer. With 25 of his 38-race schedule complete already, Despain his #75e to three first place wins, as well as a baker's dozen of Top 5 finishes in the face of rain delays and rough track conditions.
Elliot Despain has earned three first place wins and 13 Top 5 finishes this seasons.
Elliot Despain has earned three first place wins and 13 Top 5 finishes this seasons.

The six-year K&N Filters racing veteran faced an uphill climb earlier this season after a fantastic April with eight nights of racing, four top five finishes, and two top ten finishes. A well-earned fifth place finish at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, KY on April 28th took quite a bit of work to achieve. "The track was very rubbered up. I think I was better than the two in front of me but could not get out of the rubber to pass," stated Elliott.

Mother Nature rained out the race at Ponderosa Speedway on May 4th, so the Despain crew continued on to Florence Speedway in Union, KY for Fan Appreciation Night the following day. The heavy rain Friday night and Saturday morning made for very rough track conditions. Starting fifth amid the 39 modifieds, Despain finished 3rd.

"We had a great car and I could get a lot of drive off the bottom. I only wish we would have had a few more laps and I think we would have been in the hunt for the win," stated Despain. Despain credits K&N Filters for his race car's performance, "They protect your engine from dust and dirt. They increase performance! And they're very dependable!"

This season has been a battle against the elements and odds for Modified racer Elliot Despain, but has resulted in multiple podium finishes.

Despain first reached out to K&N when attending the 2006 Performance Racing Industry Trade show in Indianapolis, IN. "I came in contact with the friendly K&N reps and formed a partnership," he recounts. "They have been awesome for my career!" A career that has been rife with championships, including winning the Clay City Raceway Bluegrass Nationals, two prestigious runner-up finishes at the Kentucky State Champ Kart Division and Purple Plate at the Sportsdrome Speedway in Jeffersonville, In. Despain also took the Bluegrass Speedway Modified Rookie of the Year and the American Modified Series Rookie of the Year, as well as wins at Friday Night Rumble Winner at Ponderosa Speedway, Junction City, KY and the opening night A-Main at the historic Brownstown Speedway, Brownstown, In.

Two days later on May 7th, Despain Motorsports again would travel to Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY.Even after an unfortunate spin in qualifying, Despain would finish the heat in third, go on in the feature with a very respectable 7th. Seemingly annoyed at Despain's efforts, Mother Nature would rain out the next day's races.

It wouldn't be until May 18th that Despain returned to Ponderosa Speedway for two nights of racing for a chance at $1,000. Coming out in 7th overall in time trials, Despain battled for second and ended in 3rd. Moving up through the field with several yellow and double-file restarts, Despain moved up the field to finish fourth. "We had the best car tonight that we have had since the win at Brownstown," stated the very happy and tired driver.

The next night, night two of the May Mayhem and the 13th annual JuneBug Memorial weekend, saw Despain fought for the lead but came up short, finishing in second. In the feature, Despain would not be deterred and took the lead for a quarter lap win. "We had a very good car last night, but tonight it was even better. I could run anywhere on the track. I would like to thank my crew and sponsors," stated Despain from Victory Lane.

May 25th and 26th would earn Despain Motorsports two more wins at Ponderosa Speedway Friday night and his first DNF at Richmond Raceway in Richmond, KY Saturday. "After going to the pits and looking at the car and having only minor damage with the drag link tie rod and some body damage, we feel very lucky," stated Elliott after a front stretch pile up in lap 11.

Despain Motorsports made its first trip to Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana for the Summer National Tour, July 8th. Starting eighth in his heat, Despain made his way up to fourth. Two days later on July 10th, the crew traveled to Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky for the next round of the Summer National Tour; where he would suffer a failed fuel pump. Three days later, Mother Nature would mock his luck with another rained-out race at Ponderosa Speedway.

Undeterred, the one-time Kentucky Karting Association racer, and current Battle of the Bluegrass Series, American Modified Series, UMP DirtCar competitor returned again to Ponderosa Speedway, where Despain would win the heat and finish in fourth place. The next week at Ponderosa would provide another fourth place finish.

It's hard to argue that Despain was bred to compete, "Being named after NASCAR Great Bill Elliott, it was in my blood from day one! At the age of three, my parents bought me a four wheeler & took me to a local motorcross track. At the age of five, we bought my first go-kart. I raced at Dumplin Valley in Tennessee and with the Kentucky Karting Association."

Today, Despain is still winning and fighting the elements. At the 30th Annual North South 100 in Florence, Kentucky, practice was rained out Thursday night, and battled to finish 7th. Nonetheless, the fighting modified racer has plenty of races left in the series to complete. His never-say-die positive attitude and winning spirit has been what has pushed Elliot Despain to repeated podium finishes and will continue to do so throughout his career.

Top Dodge Ram 1500 Performance Truck Upgrades

Dodge Ram 1500
Dodge Ram 1500

John and Horace, the Dodge brothers, found their inspiration making parts for Ford and other makers. Their first automobile debuted in 1914 and their reputation for durability and quality immediately spread nationwide. Their first truck was made during World War I, a panel van with a half-ton capacity and a roaring 35 horsepower, four-cylinder engine.

Although Dodge had produced trucks since 1917, the 1981 pickups were the first modern day trucks to sport the Ram name. Dodge first used the Ram's head hood ornament back in 1933 to distinguish its trucks as rugged vehicles, but the emblematic badge was dropped in the 1950s. It was resurrected in 1981, when Dodge's marketing think-tank wisely decided to bring back the old mascot.
