Known as a compact pickup when first introduced in the United States during the 1995 model year, the Toyota Tacoma is now in its third generation of production.  The first generation model offered three different engines, including:

• 2.4 Liter four-cylinder that generated 142-hp and 160-lb-ft of torque
• 2.7 Liter four-cylinder that produced 150-hp and 177-lb-ft of torque
• 3.4 Liter V6 that created 190-hp and 220-lb-ft of torque

The first generation Tacoma with the 2.4 Liter engine achieved a very fuel-efficient rating of 29 miles per gallon; the 2.7 accomplished 26 miles per gallon; and the 3.4 delivered a respectable 22-mpg. Buyers also had a choice of 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive.

The present model is the third generation, which was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2015. A 2.7-liter I4 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission or an optional 5-speed manual with a 3.5-liter V6 powers the pickup today.

Pontiac introduced the Vibe compact hatchback in 2002 and produced the car until 2010. The buyer had a choice of three engines – a Toyota-constructed 1.8-liter straight-4, 16 valve engine with a manual or automatic transmission that generated 126-hp for the basic model; an all-wheel drive with automatic transmission that produced 118-hp; or a VVTL-I engine with a manual 6-speed transmission that created 164-hp.

Before the United States Environmental Protection Agency changed its testing procedure in 2008, the Vibe was considered the most fuel-efficient vehicle General Motors in North America had ever produced.

The second generation Vibe was introduced in 2009 and was produced until 2010. The buyer had a choice of two new inline-four engines – a Toyota-built 2.4 liter that was also used in the Toyota Camry and a 1.8-liter 2ZR-FE engine, which was standard on the base model. It also included computerized traction control and anti-lock brakes.  

The Pontiac Vibe may not exist any longer, but the Toyota Tacoma continues to be one of the hottest pickups in the U.S. market.

The BMW M57 is a inline-six diesel engine produced from 1998 – 2010 and installed in a variety of sedans and SUVs. Highly regarded at the time for its performance and quiet operation, M57 won the 2.5–3.0 L category of the International Engine of the Year competition for 1999 through 2002, and again in 2009. The reduced-displacement version won the same award in 2005 and 2006.

The M57 diesel engine was developed from BMW's smaller 2.0-liter inline four cylinder diesel. The two engines share the same cylinder bore spacing and other dimensions, for manufacturing efficiency, making the M57, in essence, a M47 with two extra cylinders. Both engines are built on aluminum engine blocks, which resulted in an 11 pound weight reduction over the previous iron-block 3.0 L inline six-cylinder BMW diesel.

The most common applications for the M57 diesel engine are 3-Series, 5-Series, and 7-Series BMW sedans, 3-Series BMW station wagons, X3, X5, and X6 Crossovers From 2002 through 2006 it was also the diesel engine option for the Land Rover Range Rover. The least powerful of the M57 engines was the 2.5 L version installed in the 2000 – 2003 BMW 525d. Aiming to bring a heritage of elegance, and motoring fun to a new generation of drivers, the British Jaguar S-Type and Ford Lincoln LS from 2000-2005 were brought to market as entry-level midsize executive sedans offering comfort and style.
