2012 - 2016 Mercedes Benz K&N Air Filter Delivers a Performance Boost

K&N E-0663 air filter is designed to fit into the factory air box and enhance airflow

The K&N E-0663 air filter is designed to fit into the factory air box and enhance airflow for improved performance.

The origin of the name Mercedes-Benz can be traced back to Karl Benz, who is known as the inventor of the first gasoline powered automobile in 1886. Recognized as one of the most prestigious, as well as one of the oldest automobile companies in the world, it manufactures luxury cars and is based in Stuttgart and Baden-Wurtternberg, Germany.

Besides its involvement in the development of the internal combustion engine, the company has led the automotive industry with a number of innovations and firsts including:

  • The first honeycomb radiator, which is still used today.
  • The first float carburetor, which was used until the creation of fuel injection.
  • The first passenger road car to have brakes on all four wheels.
  • The first diesel-powered passenger car.
  • The creator of “safety cage” or “safety cell” construction with front and rear crumple zones.
  • Patenting a device that prevents drive wheels from spinning.
  • The first automobile with an anti-lock braking system.
  • The first to introduce airbags to the European market.
  • The first to include pre-tensioners on seat belts.
  • The world’s first car with seven-speed automatic transmission.
  • The first to offer automobiles with electronic stability, brake assist and other types of safety equipment.
  • The most powerful series production four-cylinder turbocharged motor (as of June 2013).

In addition, Mercedes-Benz produced the world’s first robot car in the 1980s and in October 2015 introduced the Vision Tokyo, a five-seat electric van powered by a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell.

Mercedes-Benz also has its own in-house performance-tuning division called AMG, which creates high-performance versions of a number of Mercedes-Benz production cars.

Importer Max Hoffman introduced the first Mercedes-Benz into the United States in 1952. By 1957, Mercedes-Benz entered into a distribution agreement with the Studebacker-Packard Corporation to import Mercedes-Benz automobiles into the United States. In 1965, the company created Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) to directly import cars into the U.S.

Today, Mercedes-Benz is second among luxury cars manufacturers in the U.S. market. Top selling Mercedes-Benz models in the United States in 2015 included the C-Class and the CLA-Class.

Owning a Mercedes-Benz is a major investment and, like any investment, one would want to protect it. Not only does the K&N E-0663 air filter help to protect your Mercedes, it is designed to boost performance. Due to its high airflow and exceptional filtration, the filter will not only boost performance, but will also keep your precision engine running clean.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Winners: Justin Haley, Tyler Dippel, Todd Gilliland

Justin Haley autographs the K&N mini helmet after his win at Greenville Pickens Speedway

The first three races of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season produced three different winners. The first race in February added a bit of drama on the final lap.

Todd Gilliland won the Jet Tools 150, the season opener in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida on Feb. 14. What looked like a costly pile-up on the final lap turned out to be an avoidable incident. The race was extended an extra lap because the proper flags were not displayed from the flag stand.

As a result, the drivers continued for an extra lap. The three race leaders, Gilliland, Spencer Davis and Ronnie Bassett Jr., collided on the final lap. Bassett crossed the finish line first, but the win was awarded to Gilliland.

“It was crazy,” Gilliland said after the race. “We had it under control to start. We may have lost it a little bit there at the end. But it all fell back into our hands.”

Bassett said he didn’t see the flags from the stand and continued to race for the win even though the race was technically over.

“First thing, I never saw the white flag,” Bassett said. “The spotter would come on the radio and he said we’re coming to the checker this time. Any racer is going to race to the checkered flag. Went down into turn one and got cleared down to the bottom. The two leaders got together in three and four. I went up underneath them and when I got up underneath them, they came down a little bit. We all got together racing for the W. I don’t know what happened after that.”

Bassett ended up in third place. Davis was second.

Gilliland, a third-generation NASCAR driver from North Carolina, won his second K&N Pro Series race in as many starts. He won the season finale in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Phoenix International Raceway last year.

Tyler Dippel won the second K&N Pro Series East race of the season at Mobile International Raceway in Alabama on March 12. “It’s so unreal. I can’t believe this happened,” Dippel said. “I really don’t have words for it.” Dippel, a 15-year-old rookie, won the Mobile 150 presented by Mobile Sports Authority in his second K&N Pro Series start. He crossed the finish line after a green-white-checker finish.

“We started fifth. We had a little bit of a mess up on our second lap in qualifying,” Dippel said. “The car was running really good. I knew we had something when the green flag dropped. Made a couple of moves at the start and kept pace with myself. Got the lead really early there and got out front and just rode it.” Davis was the runner-up for the second race in a row, while Jesse Little was third.

“At the end of each run, we would be right back up there,” Davis said. “Restarts hurt us a little bit. We had our car set up for the long runs. That bit us with that green-white-checkered. We tried to make something happen. At least we got to second. We maintained the points lead. That’s a good thing.”

Dominique Van Wierwingen led the first 29 laps of the race. The driver from Canada started on the front row next to Davis, who won the pole. She took the lead on the first lap and set a K&N Pro Series East record for leading the most laps in a race by a woman driver. The previous record in the 30-year history of the K&N Pro Series East was four laps.

Another teenager won the third race of the K&N Pro Series East season. Justin Haley, 16, won the Kevin Whitaker 150 at Greenville Pickens Speedway in South Carolina on March 26. It was his first win in 23 career starts in the K&N Pro Series East.

“We played a safe race. Saved the tires for the last 75. Tried to use the first 75 as a judge for the last 75,” Haley said. “The first run I was holding back but the second run we were pretty much all out.”

Haley took the lead from Kyle Benjamin on lap 143. Haley led the last six laps of the race. Benjamin was second after winning the pole and leading a race-high 122 laps.

Bassett was third, followed by Davis in fourth. It was Davis’ third top-five finish of the season. Davis leads the K&N Pro Series East standings after three races. He has a three-point lead over Benjamin. The top four drivers in the K&N Pro Series East standings are separated by only six points. Haley is third with 121 points. Dippel is fourth with 120 points. Bassett is fifth, nine points behind Davis.

The next race in the K&N Pro Series East is the PittLite 125 at Bristol Motor Speedway on April 16.

NASCAR West Series Opener at Irwindale - Rookie Todd Gilliland Wins 3 in a Row

Rookie Todd Gilliland celebrates his win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Series opener in Irwindale

The 15-year-old from North Carolina won the K&N Pro Series West season opener at Irwindale Speedway in California on March 19. He is 3-for-3 in K&N Pro Series races, winning his first three races on the NASCAR circuit.

He had to work hard and exercise some patience for his latest win in the Toyota/ NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Irwindale. He started on the pole, but lost his lead on lap 4. He worked his way back to the front on lap 123 and won by two seconds over Ryan Partridge.

“Sometimes it was hard looking out front and watching them race two and three wide,” Gilliland said. “You always want to be out there with them and going for the lead. We knew coming into this race we couldn’t lead the whole entire race. We were going to save our stuff a little bit and maybe fall back if we needed to. Our strategy worked this time.”

Gilliland, a third-generation NASCAR driver, won the K&N Pro Series West season finale at Phoenix International Raceway in November. It was his debut in the K&N Pro Series. He won the K&N Pro Series East season opener at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida in February, his second win in a row.

Partridge, who raced late models at Irwindale Speedway before moving up to the K&N Pro Series ranks, led for 33 laps, the same as Gilliland.

“Todd had a great car,” Partridge said. “Our car lost a little bit of forward drive, a lot of bit of forward drive, early in the race while we were saving the tires, which is never good if you’re trying to save and you still don’t have the forward drive.”

Todd Gilliland works his way up the field to win by two seconds over Ryan Partridge at Irwindale.

A caution on lap 130 set up the last restart of the race. When the race resumed on lap 133, Gilliland stayed in front of Partridge and the field.

“Todd on the other hand, I don’t think I ever saw his car wiggle once,” Partridge said. “He was absolutely glued to the race track. It really showed there with the last few laps. He was able to break away. I was praying for a green-white-checkered. I really thought we could have made something on the restart. It is what it is. It was a great run. We are looking forward to the next one.”

Chris Eggleston, the reigning K&N Pro Series West champion, was third at Irwindale.

“I thought we had something for them. On the last 100 to 110, I started to slip the right rear in the last couple,” Eggleston said. “The short runs were killing us. I had to try so hard. As hard as we had to work for this third-place finish, it was definitely a struggle, but we’ll definitely take it.”

Gracin Raz, who started on the front row next to Gilliland, led a race-high 82 laps but finished in 14th place. Noah Gragson was fourth, followed by Johnny Borneman in fifth.

The next race on the K&N Pro Series West is the NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif., on April 2.

Team UXC Dominates GNCC 4x4 Racing with Help from K&N Filters

"Yeah, that's the tricky part" Michael Swift of Team UXC Racing explained when asked about passing a competitor on a 9 to 12 mile wooded off-road race course barely wide one enough for one ATV.

Michael Swift attacks the trail on his Polaris UTV with Kevin Trantham close on his heels

"Michael Swift attacks the trail on his Polaris UTV with Kevin Trantham close on his heels"

What's no trick, though, is the rise to prominence of the Polaris-mounted Team UXC Racing to the top rungs of the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series. We asked Michael how he's managed to generate such dominating performances with a relatively new team, which we'll share with you in a moment, but first a little background on Michael and the team.

In 2004 he ran a few events on his own stock 4x4 and was hooked. For 2005, Michael partnered with his brother-in-law Chris Beasley and ran the entire series. His talent and dedication were rewarded with his first factory ride in 2006, and he's been a factory rider every year since. Chris retired in 2012 and Michael was on his own.

While having ridden for other manufacturers in those intervening years, Michael refers to switching to Polaris in 2014 as a "game changer for me and our team." Michael was the only rider in the field on a Polaris, and Polaris had no previous experience, Michael still pulled down a win and finished fourth in the Pro 4x4 Championship.

Michael Swift #202 and Kevin Trantham #209 celebrate a 1-2 win after the Wild Boar GNCC Race

"Michael Swift #202 and Kevin Trantham #209 celebrate a 1-2 win after the Wild Boar GNCC Race"

More than anything, Michael learned from his 2014 experiences what he needed to do for 2015. He brought over Kevin Trantham, who'd finished second in 2014 for another team. In Kevin he found a teammate who was a true partner, someone dedicated to the same goals as Michael. "The Friday before the race Kevin and I walk the entire track and discuss how to drive it," Michael said. Further, Michael says there's a constant flow of information between Kevin and himself about how to set up their Polaris 4x4s.

The result was a dominating performance for Team UXC Racing and Polaris, which two years earlier wasn't even involved in the sport. Polaris won 10 out of 13 events, giving them the manufacturer's championship, though neither rider won their championship due to splitting wins. Michael was philosophical about the situation. "When you're a team you have to understand your goal is deliver a championship."

For 2016, Team UXC has grown considerably. Michael Swift and Kevin Trantham have returned to the GNCC's Pro 4×4 class and have showcased the Polaris Scrambler XP 1000's full capabilities with two wins. The pair will also be piloting a new Polaris 1000S Razor in the Pro UTV class.

Kevin Trantham gets the win at the Cannonball GNCC race

In addition, Graham Widdicombe from the United Kingdom will return to the team with an all-new Polaris Scrambler 850 in the GNCC 4×4 40+ class, Nic Snyckers from Toronto will also pilot a Scrambler 850 EPS in the GNCC 4×4 C Class. Plus the newest addition to the UXC team is Jeff Wright from Phoenix, who will compete at 13 GNCC rounds this season in the 4×4 A/B class. A pair of Polaris ACE 900 SPs will be piloted by Tory Rush of Gillette, WY, and Becky Widdicombe from the UK.

Now, Michael Swift's secrets to his success, going from a one rider team on a 4x4 no one was racing, to wining the championship for Polaris, to expanding his operation to five riders AND winning the first two races of the season. Here goes:

  1. "Having a good team and I just don't mean just at the races, but family and friends at home. It's so important for them to support what we're doing (BTW, after tucking in duties, Michael goes out to the shop and works every night until midnight or 1 am – that's dedication).
  2. "Constant experience on just a 4x4. Some guys jump around from a bike to a 4x4 and back but I think my focus has helped me a lot."
  3. "Teamwork. Kevin and I are always sharing information, testing new parts and set-ups."
  4. "Having a personal trainer who is a racer. I use Marc Pataro of MotoPro Training in MD and I do his fitness program every day."
  5. "We don't take sponsorship from just any company or have companies bid for sponsorships. We decide on what parts we want and if we can't get the parts through sponsorship then we buy then. We don't want any second-rate components on our 4x4s."

"I am excited about our team's 2016 season as we have worked hard the past two years developing our Polaris Scramblers and spent this past off season testing and training to fine tune our products and riding," said Michael. "I want to thank K&N Filters and all our sponsors for the great products they provide and the amazing support."

Not only do we expect to see Michael and Kevin at the front of the field for many years to come, Michael's 11 year old son is currently racing in a youth class and will no doubt be moving up to race with his father in just a few years time.

K&N Air Intake for F30/F31 BMW 335i N55 Adds Horsepower

K&N Air Intake System 69-2027TS

K&N Air Intake System 69-2027TS for the BMW 335i

Since anyone can remember, the BMW 3-Series has been "the one to beat". Every time a new compact sport sedan/coupe debuts, it's immediately measured against the perfectly balanced 3-Series yardstick. The engineers at Bayerische Motoren Werke have a secret recipe for performance, and they cooked up a special batch just for the F30/F31 2012-2015 BMW 335i. This little Bavarian Barnstormer was the most extreme non-M 3-Series that you could get, and that meant it was both a powerful canyon carver and a luxury car. To make this possible, those madmen in Munich gave it a 3-liter straight-6 with direct injection, variable valve lift control, and a great big twin-scroll turbo to deliver thrust throughout the rev-range. All of that results in 300-hp and 300 lb-ft, which is enough to launch you to 60 mph in the low 5-second range. Adding an estimated 8-hp and 8 lb-ft will certainly improve performance, and that's just what the K&N Performance Air Intake System was designed to do.

The secret to your Bimmer's performance is that twin-scroll turbo, which uses the engine's exhaust to spin an air compressor to force a huge amount of air into the (relatively) tiny cylinders. The direct injection system then sprays in a fine mist of fuel, and the whole mixture is compressed as the piston travels upward. Once the spark plug ignites this fuel/air cocktail, all of that pressurized air contributes to a massive explosion that forces the piston back down to turn the crankshaft and send power to the wheels.

BMW 335i Engine Bay with K&N Air Intake

BMW 335i Engine Bay with K&N Air Intake

The gasoline explosion that caused all of that movement is where horsepower actually comes from, and you can increase it by simply forcing colder air into the cylinders. The BMW N55 engine has an intercooler to reduce the incoming air temperature. However, the factory BMW F30 intake collects air through an opening in the airbox, then forces it through a thick paper air filter and down a narrow plastic intake tube. By the time that air reaches the turbo, it's already heated up because of the restrictions and turbulence that it encountered along the way. To reduce these airflow restrictions, the K&N 69-2027TS Performance Air Intake System uses a high-flow cotton gauze air filter that is able to collect and clean larger volumes of air. As dirt particles flow through the filter pleats, they become ensnared by the sticky cotton fibers. The special oil treatment in the filter will eventually soak into the dirt, causing it to become sticky and capture other dirt particles as if were part of the filter. This unique capability helped to put K&N air filters on the map, and it's the reason they're able to capture the vast majority of airborne contaminants before they reach the engine.

Dyno Chart for 69-2027TS Air Intake

Dyno Chart for 69-2027TS Air Intake

To reduce the amount of hot engine bay air from entering the system, that reusable K&N performance air filter is positioned in place of the factory airbox, behind a heat shield that uses a thick rubber gasket to seal itself against the hood. This allows the air filter to collect a steady supply of cooler air from behind the bumper. The air is then cleaned and sent into a large diameter aluminum intake tube, where it flows through wide, mandrel-bent curves. When the air does finally reach that 'twin power' turbo, the temperature is lower and the oxygen/horsepower content is much higher. The intercooler can then create a colder charge to send to the motor, which enables it to make more power without making any programming or under-hood modifications. The intake tube also has built-in fittings for all of the factory sensors, so you'll be able to install the K&N 69-2027TS Air Intake in about 90 minutes, using just a few hand tools.

With a K&N 69-2027TS Typhoon Air Intake installed on a 2012 BMW 335i 3.0L, testing on a chassis dynamometer showed an estimated gain of 8.27 horsepower and 8.49 lb-ft of torque.
