The Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb, also known as the Race to the Clouds, is an annual automobile and motorcycle hill climb to the summit of Pike’s Peak, Colorado which will take place on June 28, 2015. Having started in 1916, it is the second-oldest motorsport event in America after the Indianapolis 500. The track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) over 156 turns, climbing 4,720 feet (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on Pike’s Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 feet (4,300 m), on grades averaging 7 percent.

American motorcycle manufacturer Victory Motorcycles, in partnership with custom bike builder Roland Sands of Roland Sands Design and Cycle World Magazine, plan to race a new prototype engine at the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. The prototype racing motorcycle, named Project 156 for the 156 turns in the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb, will feature a liquid-cooled American V-Twin engine and be piloted by Cycle World Road Test Editor Don Canet.

“We have an intense focus at Victory Motorcycles to prove the performance of our vehicles,” said Rod Krois, Victory General Manager. “Competing as an American OEM at America’s race is an exciting opportunity. The grueling conditions at Pike’s Peak provide the perfect proving ground for our new Project 156 race engine.”

The Project 156 motorcycle is a hand-built road-racing bike with a prototype Victory v-twin engine developed at Victory’s Minnesota research and development facility. This liquid-cooled engine represents the future of performance for the Victory brand. It features twin 67mm intake throttle bodies with downdraft runners for maximum power and torque as well as a performance valve train with titanium intake and exhaust valves for maximum revolutions per minute (RPM).

The Roland Sands Design team developed and built a chassis to cradle the Project 156 motor. “This truly has been an All-American effort,” said Roland Sands. “The Race to the Clouds is a legendary event and we couldn’t be more proud to partner with Victory on the endeavor. We’ve built lots of custom motorcycles, but building a purpose-built race bike for this project has been a unique experience that we’ll remember for a long time.”

The advanced composite technology used in carbon fiber reinforced polymer, commonly referred to as carbon fiber, results in an incredible strength to weight ratio. The use of carbon fiber is ideal for applications that require strength, lightness and stiffness. K&N filters has an on-site composite department which builds hand-laid carbon fiber components ranging from air filter bases to custom dragster air scoops and racing air boxes.

John Jump, Powersports Brand Manager for K&N Engineering, Inc., said “Our involvement with the RSD Victory Motorcycles Project 156 draws from a relationship established several years back. Not only have we been involved with Roland Sands and many of his project builds through the years, we also have had a long lasting relationship with Falkner-Livingston with proven success at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. This time Don Canet, the pilot of Project 156, will get the honor of pushing this bike to its limits and into the clouds. K&N supports many racers who compete at the mountain, but our involvement and development of the carbon fiber parts that went into this bike, as well as our collaboration with the builder, team and rider will make 2015 the most exciting year to date.”

Cycle World Road Test Editor, Don Canet, has anxiously awaited his chance to throw a leg over Project 156 for some seat time in preparation of his second Pike’s Peak Hill Climb

Cycle World Road Test Editor, Don Canet, has anxiously awaited his chance to throw a leg over Project 156 for some seat time. “Ever since Victory and Roland Sands introduced me to this project I’ve been counting down the days to the event,” said Cycle World Road Test Editor Don Canet. “This will be my second time racing the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. Now that I’ve had a taste of what it’s like I’m ready to get back and finish stronger in 2015.”

Unfortunately, the Victory Motorcycles Project 156 suffered a setback on Saturday June 13th in a practice accident on the Pikes Peak race course. Don Canet did not suffer any serious injuries, and was immediately up from the crash, however the motorcycle was damaged enough to require a complete strip-down and frame straightening. “As I was going up the mountain I lost the front end under braking, asphalt temperature was extremely low and, counter-intuitively, I think the tire was getting colder as the run went on,” said Canet.

The Falkner-Livingston team transported the race bike back to the Roland Sands Designs headquarters in Southern California for evaluation. “Not going to lie…” said RSD project leader Cameron Brewer, “Project 156 is really beat up. But we are racers at heart and I can promise Victory Motorcycles, Cycle World Magazine, RSD and Pikes Peak fans that we will rebuild the bike – she took one hell of a hit, but we are committed to this program.”

Don Canet’s crash during Pikes Peak testing only adds further testament to the unpredictable nature and ever changing conditions of the Race to the Clouds. With such an extreme ascent up the mountain and Colorado’s always changing weather conditions the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb is never short on thrills. It will be interesting to watch as the Roland Sands Design team scrambles to get Project 156 back in one piece and see how Don will perform come race day.

Jonathan Allard & Tri-C Team Rush to Finish New K&N Powered Sprint Car for the Win

K&N sponsored Jonathan Allard and the Tri-C Motorsports team worked all week to get a new car finished before Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway

K&N sponsored Jonathan Allard and the Tri-C Motorsports team worked all week to get a new car finished before Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California

K&N® sponsored Jonathan Allard and the Tri-C Motorsports team worked all week to get a new car finished before Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California. Allard got his weekend kicked off on Friday night by timing the Tri-C Manufacturing/K&N/ButlerBuilt No. 3c machine in second fastest during qualifying time trials. Allard lined up in the second row of his heat race and kept his elbows up as he powered his way into the lead for the win. With his finish in the heat, Allard earned himself a spot in the feature even redraw.

Pulling the six, Jonathan Allard lined the K&N filters equipped Amerikote/King Racing Products/BR Motorsports backed No. 3c machine in the third row for the 25-lap feature event. From his third row starting position, Allard was quick to work his way forward, as he reeled in Andy Forsberg on the fourth lap, and made his move exiting turn four to complete lap five. Once out in front, Allard flexed his muscle and set sail on the field as he was flawless out front and picked up his third win of the season in the United States. “It was a long week, but it was great to come out of the gate and pick up a win,” Allard said.

The K&N supported Tri-C Motorsports team packed up and headed to Stockton, California the following night for the King of the West Series. Jonathan Allard got his night started by timing in 11th fastest. Lining up on the front row of his heat race, Allard got the jump and picked up the win and also advanced to the night’s dash. Allard started on the front row of the dash eventually finishing second and securing a front row starting spot for the 30-lap feature event. As the feature event went green, Allard, Bud Kaeding, and Tyler Walker battled for the top spot down the front stretch.

Getting into turn one, a car got a bit out of control in front of Allard, and as he took action to avoid contact, Allard flipped his race car upside-down. The K&N sponsored Tri-C Motorsports crew worked feverishly in the pit area to make the restart. Unfortunately Allard had to restart from the tail end of the field. Working hard to move forward in the pack, Allard made it back inside the Top-10, only to see a part fail on the 19th lap, and bring his night to an early end. “It was shaping up to be a very good weekend for this team and I hate to see it end like it did with a crash and some tore up parts,” Allard said. “We have all been working hard, and it was good to get back into victory lane on Friday night.”

Jonathan Allard would like to thank Tri-C Manufacturing, K&N, ButlerBuilt, Amerikote, King Racing Products, BR Motorsports, Red Line Oil, KSE Racing Products, Weld Wheels, NGK Spark Plugs, FK Rod Ends, Hunt Magnetos, Longacre Products, RCM Design, Ti64, A.R.T. Speed Equipment, AL Driveline, and Hoosier Tire for their support. Allard will be back at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday nights for weekly point racing before heading to the Stockton Dirt Track with the King of the West Series.

By replacing the stock hosing & enclosed air box of 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee 3.2L models a K&N air intake is able to improve performance

The Jeep Cherokee model has a long history in the Jeep lineup. First produced in 1974 by the American Motors Corporation (AMC), the term “Sport Utility” first appeared in the 1974 Jeep Cherokee SJ sales brochure. Later on the Jeep XJ Cherokee began the modern sport utility vehicle trend spawning copycat models such as the Ford Explorer. The Jeep Liberty KJ was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Cherokee, however, outside of North America the Liberty was known as a Jeep Cherokee KJ. Jeep discontinued the Liberty and resurrected the Cherokee in the United States with the introduction of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee KL crossover SUV.

The 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Cherokee KL can be equipped with either the standard 2.4-liter Tigershark I4, or a smaller version of Chrysler’s corporate engine the 3.2L Pentastar V6 engine. 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Cherokee KL owners who opted for the EPA estimated 29 MPG and 271 horsepower FlexFuel V6 can easily outfit their Jeep crossover SUV with the superior airflow and superior performance associated with a K&N Aircharger air intake system. Typically, the factory air intake tubing, stock air filter box, and disposable air filter is a significant point of restriction in modern fuel injected cars or trucks. Because of this fact, K&N has developed an Aircharger air intake system for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Jeep Cherokee 3.2L V6 designed to free up horsepower by eliminating these restrictive factory components.

Laguna Hills HS Students use a $10K Grant to Restore K&N Equipped 1966 Ford Pickup

Laguna Hills HS automotive students installed new brakes; steering, suspension, wheels and tires to allow the 1966 Ford F100 pickup to cruise safely down the street with a mild custom stance

Opened in 1978, Laguna Hills High School (LHHS) is a relatively small high school in the Southern California beach community of Laguna Hills. Excelling in academics and athletics, LHHS also has a fully functioning Automotive Technology program, which is part of Coastline Regional Occupational Program (ROP). Laguna Hills automotive students can use the LHHS auto program to receive course credit at two local community colleges enabling students to continue their automotive education and possibly turn a passion for the automotive industry into a career.

In the summer of 2012, Laguna Hills High School students received a donated 1966 Ford F100 pickup to be used as a class restoration project. Instructor Timothy Chambers worked with Coastline ROP to apply for and secure a $10,000 grant in money from the Hagerty Education Program. The Hagerty Education Program awards scholarships and educational grants to organizations committed to "hands-on education" and making a difference in the lives of young people through the appeal of historic vehicles and vessels. The students aptly named the project “Restoration 66: Connecting Students with Cars, History, Family, and Community”.

Before any work on the 1966 Ford F100 pickup could begin, LHHS students were asked to construct a plan for the restoration, and line up all the parts and pieces they would need. Timothy Chambers tasked the students with researching the role of the automobile in their own family’s history. There were many great stories spanning multiple generations, each centered on how a simple machine somehow played a significant role in their lives.

Timothy Chambers and his automotive students knew the big Ford 390 engine needed superior airflow in order to obtain superior performance so they used round K&N air filter, # E-3699

Once a plan was made for the theme of the truck, the restoration work began. The interior was completely gutted, the aging 352 cubic inch engine was removed, suspension and steering components were removed and replaced, and the body was prepped for paint. A custom upholstered seat and headliner from George’s Upholstery makes the interior very classic and comfortable.

A blueprinted 390 cubic inch engine now sits underneath the hood, breathing through a chrome Ford Racing air cleaner with K&N air filter element, and a custom exhaust system installed by Collins Exhaust. New brakes, steering, suspension, wheels and tires allow the truck to cruise safely down the street with a mild custom stance. A beautiful coat of bright Porsche Red paint sprayed by One Day Paint and Body makes this truck standout in a crowd.

A round K&N air filte E-3699 allows the Ford big block engine to breathe easily without sacrificing filtration. The 13.125” x 4.0” air filter fits perfectly inside the chrome Ford Racing air cleaner assembly.

Chambers and the LHHS students are very proud of how the restoration of the truck turned out, and plan to take it to many car shows and events. None of the work completed would have been possible without the grant and assistance provided by the Hagerty Education Program, and vendors who provided product or offered discounts on parts to finish the build, including:
